About Curriculum and Instruction

The Athletics Program in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools is an important part of the total educational process. Athletics provides opportunities for learning experiences that are difficult to duplicate in other school activities.

Gifted Education Program
Each elementary, middle, and high school in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School system offers instructional services through the Gifted Education Program. A facilitator at each site provides enrichment and acceleration through the Gifted Education Program curriculum for an equivalent of five segments per week.

Health & Nutrition
Health Education is a planned sequential K-12 program that addresses the physical, mental, emotional and social dimensions of health. The curriculum is designed to motivate and assist students to maintain and improve their health, prevent disease and reduce health-related risk behaviors.

Language Arts / Reading
Language is the means by which people communicate. The English language is a remarkably rich and flexible language. By learning how the language functions and by practicing skills, students can acquire the competence necessary to express adequately what they know and think. These skills are taught to students in K-12 language arts in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools.

Library-Media Services
The library- media program provides to students and staff access to all forms of information in various formats and the materials necessary to accomplish the curricula goals of the school system. In addition to resources, students are provided with expert guidance and instruction in finding requisite materials and utilizing information.

Massie Heritage Center
Massie is a museum and a resource center for Heritage Education, especially as it relates to Savannah's history and its environment. The Massie Center hosts thousands of students each year who attend educational programs that link Savannah's Historic Landmark District to the learning objectives required by the school district in various disciplines and at all grade levels.

Mathematics
The mathematics curriculum presents a vision of mathematics that is designed to meet the diverse needs of students in every school and student. The curriculum represents high academic standards across a broad spectrum of mathematics topics. It establishes the basis for a challenging program of study that will increase student achievement in mathematics.

Modern & Classical Languages Program
Students in the Savannah-Chatham Public School System have the opportunity to learn Latin, Spanish, French, and German. The instructors are all state certified and follow the guidelines established by the Georgia Department of Education.

Oatland Island Educational Center
Oatland Island Education Center is a unit of the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, and the premier environmental education center in the southeast, serving thousands of students from school systems throughout the region.

Physical Education
Physical education plays a critical role in educating the whole student. Research supports the importance of movement in educating both mind and body. Physical education contributes directly to development of physical competence and fitness. It also helps students to make informed choices and understand the value of leading a physically active lifestyle.

Science Program
Excellence in science education exemplifies the ideal that all students can achieve an understanding of science if they are given challenging science learning opportunities. These opportunities are provided within a comprehensive system of science education which encompasses science literacy, content and curriculum, knowledge and understanding, and inquiry processes and application.

Social Studies Program
Instruction in social studies includes history, geography, civics, and economics. Content and skills are taught through a spiraled and sequenced K-12 curriculum. Embedded in the curriculum are competencies that will enhance opportunities for higher level thinking skills to be developed.

Visual & Performing Arts
All schools in the Savannah-Chatham Public School System offer instruction in the visual and performing arts. Each of our 30 elementary schools offers general music classes and visual art classes for all students, and band classes for fifth graders.
