Beginning with the 2007-2008 school year, the Savannah-Chatham County Board of Education has approved for all high schools to use a Block 8 A/B Schedule. High school students will enroll in 8 classes which meet throughout the school year on an alternating day basis - with 4 courses on the "A" days, and 4 courses on the "B" days. This allows students to potentially earn 8 credits per year, for a total of 32 units during the 4 years of high school.
Advantages of a common high school block schedule include:
· Enhancing use of common instructional pacing and assessments.
· Common planning time for teachers to collaborate professionally as they ensure that the most effective teaching strategies are applied.
· Providing time within the school day for scheduling of student support, as needed, to ensure better achievement of rigorous courses.
· Better serving students who move within the district.
· Giving all students the opportunity to earn more credits and meet the more rigorous graduation regulation.
· Allowing students to take career pathway courses on alternate days at the Woodville – Tompkins Career Institute.
