Georgia’s 25 Book Reading Standard

Beginning in fourth grade and continuing through twelfth grade, all students are expected to read the equivalent of 25 books, or one million words, annually as a part of their school assignments.

The reading assignments will include several subject areas and will include course textbooks as well as novels, articles, journals, etc.    For example, a student in fourth grade will read selections related to language arts, social studies, science, mathematics and health.  In middle and high schools, teams of teachers will work together to spread out the required readings throughout the various subjects.

Teachers will develop a reading list so that the assignments occur through the year in a paced manner.  Teachers will monitor the students’ assigned reading through a number of ways.  These include student journals, graphic organizers, summaries, quizzes, and responses to reading guides.

Please encourage your child to read daily.  Provide a comfortable, quiet spot for your child and a place to keep his or her reading materials.
