Instruction in social studies should consist of essential knowledge, skills, and concepts from history, geography, economics, political science, and civics/government. The goal of this social studies curriculum is to provide students with the knowledge that they need to act thoughtfully in their lives, to understand the development of peoples and cultures, and to contribute to the vitality of our democratic institutions.
In meeting learning goals, teachers are encouraged to connect current events to the daily study of history, civics, geography, and economics. The curriculum expects students to read multiple sources, engage in debates, take field trips, visit museums, write essays, conduct independent research, create projects, use the Internet, and pursue other modes of active, reflective learning. Writing is also a part of the social studies curriculum because writing enables students to organize what they have learned and demonstrate our understanding of it.
The social studies web page features the curriculum documents that you will need to be successful classroom teachers. The Curriculum Frameworks for grades 6-12 were developed by local teachers and reflect the Georgia Performance Standards that will be implemented during this academic year, 2007-2008. The Curriculum Guides contain the K-5 curriculum which still follows the QCC standards during this academic year only. A new feature of the social studies curriculum is the Savannah History curriculum supplement. Each supplement in grades K-8 provides grade-appropriate activities aligned to state standards and are designed to enhance and complement the social studies curriculum, while also teaching our students about the unique and rich history of Savannah. Another exciting curriculum opportunity is a high school elective course entitiled Savannah History.
The social studies web page also features useful information related to student events, professional organizations, state testing, and much more.
Our district and social studies department has been awarded five Teaching American History grants from the U.S. Department of Education. The grant programs provide unprecedented professional learning opportunities for our teachers and include yearlong programs and summer travel institutes. Detailed information about the programs, as well as a resource library, can be found at the TAH website, which can be accessed from the social studies web page.
We hope you will make use of the resources that have been provided for you. Please feel free to contact us should you need assistance.
