About Visual and Performing Arts
All schools in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System offer instruction in the visual and performing arts. Each of our 30 elementary schools offers general music classes and visual art classes for all students, and band classes for fifth graders. Most of our elementary schools have the Yamaha MIE Piano Keyboard Labs for students to receive state of the art instruction using the latest computerized music technology. Several elementary schools offer opportunities for students to study string instruments, and dance and theater instruction is offered at the Bloomingdale and Gadsden Academy programs in addition to the all of the visual and performing arts classes mentioned above.
Middle school and high school students have the option of continuing their studies in the visual and performing arts through band, chorus, and visual art classes. Drama instruction is available at several middle schools and high schools, and students may elect to audition to attend the Academy at Shuman Middle School for instruction in art, music, dance and theater. Students who profess a serious interest in the arts can audition for admission to the Savannah Arts Academy, a dedicated arts high school where all students select a major in one or more arts disciplines.
The Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools offer award winning programs in the arts on all levels. Arts education is an important part of the total curriculum in all of our schools, and students are encouraged to participate in these programs through out their years of matriculation in our school system.
