Welcome to Curriculum and Instruction!

Welcome to the Office of Curriculum and Instruction!

The Office of Curriculum & Instruction includes the instructional content areas of Communication Arts (English, Language Arts, Reading, Writing), Math, Science, Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts, World Languages, Health and Physical Education, and ROTC.  In addition, the district’s Programs for the Gifted as well as English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) are also part of the Office of Curriculum & Instruction.  Links to each area’s informational page are available to you from this web page.

We are very excited to be a part of the statewide implementation of the Georgia Performance Standards.    The entire state is working to implement the Georgia Performance Standards  http://www.georgiastandards.org/  throughout the next several years. This new state curriculum sets high standards, maintains clear expectations, and should raise the achievement level of all students.  This is the most extensive improvement in education in Georgia in the past 18 years.   This chart should help you understand the implementation schedule, which begins with the 2005-2006 school year.  The school years below indicate the first year that the new Georgia Performance Standards will be taught to all students in each of the four major content areas.

The Office of Curriculum & Instruction has published a notebook for teachers, Pathway to Success, that outlines the Georgia Performance Standards and provides additional information on strategies as well as frameworks to get started.  It is expected that each teacher will know, teach and assess the standards.  Alignment of the intended curriculum with what is actually taught and tested will ensure that our students have maximum opportunity to achieve. Therefore, it is of foremost importance that each and every school and teacher guarantee that the curriculum is taught to all students.
