Through out the 2008-2009 school year, the Department for Exceptional Children has scheduled monthly

screenings for children ages 3-5 years for the Preschool Intervention (PSI) Program.  The 2010 Preschool Intervention (PSI) Program newsletter contains PSI program description as well

as screening information for parents, teachers and child care providers of children ages 3-5 years. 

 

 

What is the Preschool Intervention (PSI) program?

 

The Preschool Intervention program is a free service of the public school system.  This program is designed to serve three, four, and five year old children who have special education needs.  Preschool Intervention makes the early years special through learning experiences that help improve communication, motor, cognitive, social, and self-help skills.

 

Who is eligible?

 

Children with any of the following:

·    Autism Spectrum Disorders

·    Deaf/Hard of Hearing

·    Emotional and Behavioral Disorders

·    Hearing Impairment

·    Mild Intellectual Disabilities

·    Moderate Intellectual Disabilities

·    Orthopedic Impairment

·    Specific Learning Disabilities

·    Speech/Language Impairment

·    Severe/Profound Intellectual Disabilities

·    Traumatic Brain Injury

·    Visual Impairment

 

How are services delivered?

 

Services may be delivered through one of the following settings:

 

·   School-based.

·   Home-based.

·   Community-based.

 

All children are served in the least restrictive environment based on each individual’s needs.

 

 

Preschool Intervention program services include:

 

  • Assistive technology devices.

 

  • Individual Education Programs planned for each child in order to meet specific needs.

 

  • Parent education and support to offer parents techniques and current information on child development and special education.

 

  • Developmental, educational, speech-language, and psychological testing services.

 

  • Occupational and physical therapy, and speech therapy when applicable.

 

  • Preschool Intervention specialists who are trained in Early Childhood Education and Special Education.
