Parent Advisory Committee (PAC)

What is the Parent Advisory Committee?

The Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) is an open committee of parents with students who receive any services through the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools’ Department for Exceptional Children.   The committee was formed in 2002 to support students with disabilities and their families through improved:

  • Communication among parents, students, teachers, staff, the Board of Education (BOE) and administration.

  • Training and education to parents, students, teachers, staff, the BOE and administration regarding special education.

  • Advocacy for all special education students and their families.

  • Monitoring to ensure accountability occurs in all schools.

  • Collaboration and coordination of services for special education.

Who can join?

Any parent, family member, or caregiver of a student in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools who is receiving related services through the Department for Exceptional Children is welcome to join PAC.  Related services include speech therapy, occupational therapy and/or physical therapy.  The PAC has sponsored parent forums and resource fairs in the community that provided information on topics such as:

  • Disability Awareness
  • Behavior issues
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Autism
  • Individualized Education Program (IEP)
  • Speech, Physical and Occupational Therapy
  • Medicaid/Medicare Waivers
  • Title I Reading Programs
  • Parent education support that offers parents current information about disability issues and awareness.

PAC parents welcome calls from other parents and are available to assist with many parent concerns!

When are the meetings?

PAC meets the first Monday of every month from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Meeting locations vary, so please call Mary Poncy, Facilitator, at 272-2774 for more details.
