On Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at H.V. Jenkins High School, more than 200 Savannah-Chatham County Public School System fifth graders from 28 elementary schools will demonstrate their talent in the 2007 fifth-grade All-Star Honor Band. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will last until 12:30 p.m.
Each year the best beginning elementary band students, nominated and selected by their elementary school band directors, come together for a one day All-Star Honor Band event that recognizes their talent, hard work and potential in the area of instrumental music. These selected students participate in a special band clinic conducted by the area middle school band directors.
The honor band’s goals and purposes are to provide a high quality playing experience for those beginning band students who have excelled in their first year, to provide the opportunity for these students to become acquainted with the middle school band director that they will have next year and to provide a motivating experience for each of these students that they may pass on to their peers after returning to their home schools.
Organizers of the honor band event hope these goals lead to a greater retention of students in the sixth grade band programs around the area.
“The vast majority of these students have never played a musical instrument before this year,” said event organizer Chris Miller. “Everything they have accomplished is a direct result of their effort and hard work, parental support and the outstanding instruction each student receives from our system-wide staff of band directors.”
