At the 60th anniversary spring conference of the School Social Workers Association of Georgia (SSWAG) last month, school social worker Chequeta Riles was presented with the School Social Worker of the Year award for the first district. This makes the second time Mrs. Riles has received this award. She was also selected School Social Worker of the Year in 2000.
Mrs. Riles is currently the School Social Worker for Haven and Garrison Elementary and Savannah High Schools. She is a proud graduate of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS).
Mrs. Riles obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work from Savannah State University and went on to earn her Masters Degree from the University of Georgia. Before joining the SCCPSS’ School Social Work Department in 1989, Mrs. Riles served in several capacities including medical social work, family counseling and job placement assistance for mentally challenged adults.
As an active community member, Mrs. Riles currently supervises Savannah’s Summer Youth Meal Program and previously served as Program Coordinator. She’s also a member of the World Changers Organization and Savannah’s First African Baptist Church.
The School Social Workers Association of Georgia exists to improve the quality of services to students so as to enhance their individual and educational potential. SCCPSS School Social Workers work with students and families to eliminate barriers to successful learning. They serve as a liaison or link between school, home and community.
