April 25-27, 2007, seven SCCPSS seniors will participate in the 2007 Medical-High School Preceptorship Program. This unique program is a collaborative medical internship project between the SCCPSS and the Georgia Medical Society. It is conducted in cooperation with Memorial University Medical and St. Joseph’s/Candler Health System.
The Preceptorship Program is designed to give high school seniors 3 days of internship with local physicians specializing in areas from neurosurgery to radiation oncology. The seven seniors will be shadowing the physicians including observations in the operating rooms, on hospital rounds and in the doctors’ offices.
The program is the first of its kind in the state of Georgia sponsored by a medical society. Such preceptorship programs more often occur at the college level.
Principals of each of the seven high schools were asked to select a student participant based on established criteria. The best and brightest students were chosen to participate in the program.
On Wednesday, April 25 the program will begin with an opening session and luncheon at 11:30 a.m. on the Memorial Medical Center Campus in the Hoskins Research Center. The program will conclude on Friday, April 27 at 4:00 p.m. in Board Room at Candler Hospital with the closing session and luncheon to congratulate the participants for their completion of the program.
