Throughout the day on Saturday, April 21, 2007, several astronomy clubs, science museums, observatories, universities, planetariums, laboratories, libraries and nature centers around Savannah will host a variety of activities for the whole family during the Oglethorpe Astronomical Association’s Astronomy Day 2007 Program.
Astronomy Day is a grass roots movement designed to share the joy of astronomy with the general population. Several local venues join together on this day each year to acquaint families and community members with local astronomical resources and facilities.
Children of all ages can take part in a number of free and interesting activities during the main event at the Tybee Island Pavilion and Pier from 2:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m.. There will be safe solar viewing, a telescope gallery, “stellar” artwork on display, face painting, planetary observing and other fun-filled events to participate in.
Savannah-Chatham County Public School System’s Oatland Island Education Center (OIEC) will take part in the event by hosting shows every half hour from 10:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. in their new, portable planetarium facility. The cost to view the show is $3.
Kids grades K through 5 can compete in a celestial coloring contest with prizes from Orion Telescopes for the winners. The contest will be judged by the Tybee Arts Association and winners will be announced at 6:00pm.
