In an effort to involve Georgia in reducing injury and death to young drivers, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) has awarded a $2,000 highway safety grant to Windsor Forest High School to establish a new or enhance an existing SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) chapter.
Darrell Farringer, the school’s School Resource Officer, registered Windsor Forest High as a state chapter and was notified that the school had received the grant in the fall of last year. In order to meet the qualifications and requirements for the grant, all eligibility criteria had to be met and OFC Farringer had to send a report to the GOHS detailing what their SADD chapter would be doing and send a list of goals their chapter is expected to achieve.
By having a comprehensive effort statewide, GOHS/SADD plans to cover teen driving issues including safety belt use, speed, inexperience and impaired driving in a coordinated manner. In addition, Windsor Forest High’s SADD chapter sent its president and advisor to a statewide leadership-training program.
All schools in the state of Georgia are encouraged to apply for the GOHS’ Grants to Develop “Innovative” Highway Safety Programs to Save Lives in Georgia each year. Once awarded the grant, Windsor Forest High and all other recipients must focus on a variety of highway safety issues throughout the school year.
Grants issued are made possible by federal funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to promote the development and implementation of innovative programs to address highway safety problems. To find out how your school can apply, visit www.gahighwaysafety.org.
