Six Savannah-Chatham County Public School System students were recognized at the 3rd annual YMCA Teen Achievers Gala, a black tie event titled “Priceless Achievers” held to honor the many precious ‘jewels’ of our community, at the Hyatt Regency Savannah this past weekend.
Coastal Middle School’s Bridgette Sands, Beach High Graduate Brittany Ridale, Johnson High’s Lorenzo Perry and Savannah High’s Jemel Brown, Nessa Hollis and Felicia Singleton were all a part of this year’s Chatham County’s YMCA team of teens who completed the full year program. Stand-out Bridgette Sands went above and beyond the program’s goals and objectives to be named Chatham County’s Teen Achiever of the Year.
The purpose of the YMCA of Coastal Georgia’s Teen Achievers Program is to help teens set and pursue high education and career goals while preparing teens overall for the transition to adulthood. That purpose is fulfilled through a full year of mentorship which includes clusters for education, college tours, cultural events and other programs that help to educate, encourage and enrich the teens so they can make positive and productive life choices.
Fred Stokes, former NFL Super Bowl winner, was the guest speaker for the event. SCCPSS’ Roy Davenport and Michele Hartzell devoted their time to the Teen Achievers program as chair and vice-chair of the Teen Achievers program steering committee.
Students can register to be a part of the 2007-2008 team of Teen Achievers on September 8, 2007. For more information on the program, contact the YMCA at 354-5480.
