Approximately 80 rising Savannah-Chatham County Public School System sixth through eighth graders who have a desire to work at an accelerated pace are back in the classroom as Junior University, one of two Pre-AP Summer Institutes based on investigative television shows, begins.

Junior University, a program for rising sixth through eighth graders, is held Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on the third floor of Savannah Arts Academy until June 21, 2007.

Students attending Junior University will be investigating future academic challenges by exploring the following themes from network shows:

Numb3rs – Advanced math skills including the use of graphing calculators and computerized geometry programs.
Without a Trace –Technology is used to fine tune research, presentation, and problem solving skills.
House – Diagnostic and prescriptions talents are developed in students so that they can be writing specialists.
Criminal Minds – Study skills and behavior that will make students life long learners are spotlighted.

Criminal Minds teacher, Joy Key-Smith, plans to bring an exciting and new adventure to her classroom each day throughout the program.  “My plan is to have a guest each day, which will be me in costume and character introducing the lesson,” said Mrs. Key-Smith.  “In 15 years of teaching middle school, I know what those kids like and they do want to learn but you better make it entertaining.  My kids and I are going to have a ball, I hope!”

Superintendent’s Scholars, a second summer program where themes will revolve around CSI, Law and Order, Monk, and NCIS, will begin on July 9, 2007.  This program is for rising ninth through tenth graders and will be held Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. at Armstrong Atlantic State University until July 19, 2007.

There are still openings for the Superintendent’s Scholars program, to find out how your child can take part, click here or contact the Gifted Education Department at 644-8127.
