Three SCCPSS 2007 Graduates Awarded Byrd Scholarships

Recent Savannah-Chatham County Public School System high school seniors; Catherine Hinesley of Savannah Arts Academy, Cheryl Lau of Jenkins High School and Douglas Walker of Windsor Forest High School have been named 2007-2008 Byrd Scholarship recipients.  Each of the three 2007 graduates will receive a $1,500 grant for direct deposit into their accounts at their prospective colleges.

The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally funded and state-administered program designed to promote academic achievement and reward exceptional high school students who show promise of continued excellence in postsecondary education by providing scholarship funds for study at the college level.

Each eligible student applicant must meet the following qualifications in order to receive these funds:

• Must demonstrate outstanding high school academic achievement
• Must be a legal resident of the state in which he or she applies
• Must be a U.S. citizen or national of the Unites States
• Must submit application materials including all documentation on or before February 1 of the same academic year as high school completion
• Must be a graduate of a public or private secondary school or have received the recognized equivalent of a high school diploma (GED) in the same year in which he or she applies for the scholarship
• Must have applied or been accepted for enrollment at an eligible institution of higher education for full-time status

One student from each high school in the state may be nominated for consideration for the Byrd Scholarship.  Catherine Hinesley plans to attend the University of Georgia, Cheryl Lau plans to attend Wellesley College and Douglas Walker plans to attend Georgia Technical Institute.  Each student’s scholarship can be renewed for an additional three years of undergraduate study.  For more information on the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program, visit the Georgia Department of Education website at http://public.doe.k12.ga.us/tss_learning.aspx?PageReq=TSSLearningByrd or click here.
