Savannah Fire Department and Woodville Tompkins Firefighter program is now underway. This unique partnership formed last spring was established to pave the way for students to complete the coursework necessary to graduate as a fully qualified firefighter.
The course, identified as the Firefighting/Public Safety Pathway, is a two-year program with four possible certifications: First Responder, CPR, Firefighter I and Firefighter II. The program provides seamless entry into employment if the student has reached the age of 18 and has successfully completed the required “live fire” training.
On Monday, September 15, 2008 at 12:30 p.m., Woodville Tompkins and Savannah Fire Department will conduct a media tour of the Firefighter program. There will be an opportunity to visit the classroom, learn more about what the students will be learning throughout the course and talk to program coordinators and facilitators. Savannah Fire Department, Chief Vickers and Woodville Tompkins Program Director, Mr. Derrick Muhammad, will be on-hand to answer questions and discuss the partnership.
Approximately 14 students have enrolled in the first-year Firefighter program. Upon completion, these students will have dual enrollment opportunities with West Georgia Technical College.
