The first round of 2008 National Merit® Scholarship winners were named today by the officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC).

SCCPSS is proud to announce that Jonathan R. Daye, a senior at Jenkins High School is the only student in Chatham County to be awarded a National Merit Scholarship thus far.

Daye will receive the National Merit Scholarship funded by BB&T Bank. BB&T Merit Scholarship awards are offered to finalists who are children of employees of the BB&T family and who meet high academic standards, and other requirements. Daye will pursue a mechanical engineering degree in college.

The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955.  High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.3 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements.

By the conclusion of the 2008 competition, about 8,200 finalists will be selected to receive National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $36 million. Winners are the finalist candidates judged to have the strongest combination of academic skills and achievements, extracurricular accomplishments, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.
