SCCPSS students are getting a hands-on look at marine life through a special program at the University of Georgia Marine Education Center and Aquarium on Skidaway Island. The program is called Students Understanding Resources for the Future (SURF). The group is made up of eleven students from three SCCPSS middle schools (DeRenne, Bartlett and Oglethorpe Charter) and nine students from local private schools. These students have been spending two to three Saturdays a month since November at the UGA Aquarium for onsite and field activities. So far, the group has dissected estuarine fish, explored archaeology sites, surveyed Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins in the local waterways and more. The SURF program ends in July with a week long Summer Research Institute.
SURF is funded by a Department of Natural Resources Coastal Incentive Grant. The students attend at no cost. They were selected through a random lottery last October.
