Groves High School students Brianna Hill (senior) and April Powell (sophomore) won 2nd and 3rd place in the Savannah Council on World Affairs Essay Contest. Both young ladies received cash prizes and were honored at a reception held at the Coastal Georgia Center.
The students were asked to submit essays on the topic “Should torture and therefore human rights violations be allowed to occur in order to extract information from suspected terrorists?” “What impact would these policies have on U.S. standing in the world?”
Brianna Hill’s won $300.00 and April Powell was awarded $100.00 for their winning entries.
This is the seventh year Savannah Council on World Affairs (SCWA) sponsored the Student Essay Competition. This is made possible by the generous contribution of The Solomons’ Family Foundation, made specifically for this event.
The essay competition provides local high school students an opportunity to engage in significant research, thought, and writing for the purpose of supporting and expressing their positions on the topic. Each essay is required to be scholarly in nature, cite at least five credible sources, include as many natural points as needed to make an effective argument, and include a works-cited page or bibliography containing only sources cited in the text of the essay. A panel of qualified readers composed of college professors and SCWA board members judges the essays.
