Two SCCPSS schools have been named winners of the 2008 Best Buy Teach Award. Hesse and Southwest Elementary Schools received $2,000 gift cards. Southwest’s Science Explorers Club used the gift card to buy digital cameras, camcorders and other technology to support classroom instruction. The club is made up of 3rd, 4th and 5th graders who meet twice a month to explore science, math and engineering concepts like poster car design and aerodynamics. With the new technology, the students are even more excited about learning.
Hesse Elementary has been producing a weekly morning show for the past 10 years. Their gift card was used to purchase two wireless laptops, a video camera and other materials to help students prepare segments for the program. They have also produced six videos with the equipment and a digital story, American Revolution: Who Am I?, which can be viewed online at http://www.savannahtah.com/history-projects.html.
Best Buy believes technology can excite and engage students, creating a more valuable educational experience. Since 2004, the Best Buy Teach Award program has awarded more than $17 million to over 6,000 K-12 schools nationwide.
