Two SCCPSS seniors have been named 2008 National Achievement® Scholarship Program winners. Janae N. Jarvis of Savannah Arts Academy and Rowillie D. Ross of Jenkins High School were two of three winners in Chatham County selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship.
The National Achievement® Scholarship Program is a privately funded academic competition established in 1964 specifically to honor scholastically talented African American youth, and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants.
This year, more than 800 National Achievement scholars nation-wide were awarded scholarships totaling about $2.6 million. The awards are underwritten by corporate and professional associations as well as the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Jarvis earned a National Achievement scholarship funded by Shaw Industries, a Dalton-based carpet manufacturing company. Jarvis plans to pursue a mechanical engineering degree. Ross won a scholarship supported by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. She plans to study Japanese graphic writing.
Winners are chosen from among finalists who met the criteria of their grantor organizations. They also had to have a proven record of consistent high academic performance; being endorsed and recommended by an official from their high school; earning satisfactory SAT scores and submitting an essay about their personal interests and goals.
