On Saturday, December 6, approximately 70 elementary and middle school students will gather at Woodville Tompkins Technical and Career Institute for the fourth annual Coastal Kids’ Robotics Competition.

Through the nation-wide FIRST LEGO League program, students in grades 4-8 compete in robot design competitions, with their technical work complimented by open ended research projects.  Projects this year focus on “Climate Connections.”

The first- and second-place teams will advance to the January super-regionals in Warner Robins, with top teams from the super-regionals advancing to the state competition in Atlanta.

The December 6 event is family-friendly and open to the public.  The program will kick off at 10:00 a.m. and end with awards at 3:00 p.m.  The Woodville Tompkins Technical and Career Institute is located at 151 Coach Joe Turner Street in Savannah.

Unlike a traditional science fair, in which students work on individual projects, LEGO League has cultivated a sports-like atmosphere in which spectators are drawn into the competition, cheering the teams on.  Interest in grade-school and middle-school robotics has grown in popularity in the Creative Coast, with the Coastal Kids’ Competition involving two teams in 2005 and seven teams this fall.

Coastal Kids’ Robotics is a program of Georgia Tech-Savannah, and is coordinated by the office of Math, Science and Technology Initiatives (MaST).  Related programs include Creative Technology Summer Camps for grades 4-12, hands-on robotics workshops by request, and introductions to engineering for middle school and high school career days.  For more information, visit www.gtsav.gatech.edu/go/mast.
