The Superintendent’s Student of the Month for May 2010 is Malayshia Stevens, a third-grade student at Garrison Elementary School.
Malayshia is a high achiever. She has worked aggressively this year to make A’s and B’s. In addition to obtaining Honor Roll she has received the “E” in Conduct Award for each marking period and the “Students Choice Award” twice this year. She also placed third in the school-wide Science Fair. Malayshia is known to ask for extra assignments to take home from school. Her teacher Susie Murph states, “Her increased reading levels and high assessment scores signify her academic ability, dedication, and hard work. She is one of Garrison’s shining stars. She complies with school rules and always displays appropriate behavior. Others look to her to set the example and she does it willingly and naturally.”
Malayshia volunteers in and outside of the classroom. She plays school with her siblings; imparting them with her knowledge. She is a member of 21st Century where she is learning Spanish, sign language, Art Appreciation, and tennis. Malayshia participates in scrapbooking in her spare time.
When asked what motivates her to strive for academic success, she says, “My nana because she helps me with my homework. She now lives in Kentucky, so I miss her. I want her to be proud of me.”
The Superintendent’s Student of the Month program recognizes individual students at the monthly board meetings who have excelled in the area of academics, leadership, and community service. Malayshia was recognized by Dr. Lockamy and presented with an award plaque and a $100 savings bond at the regular board meeting on Wednesday, June 2, 2010.
