On Wednesday, May 28, 2008, more than 200 SCCPSS fifth graders will demonstrate their talent in the 2008 fifth-grade All-Star Honor Band at H.V. Jenkins High School. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
Each year the best beginning elementary band students, nominated and selected by their elementary school band directors, come together for a one day All-Star Honor Band event that recognizes their talent, hard work and potential in the area of instrumental music. These selected students participate in a special band clinic conducted by the area middle school band directors.
The honor band’s goals and purposes are to provide a high quality playing experience for those beginning band students who have excelled in their first year, to provide the opportunity for these students to become acquainted with the middle school band director that they will have next year and to provide a motivating experience for each of these students that they may pass on to their peers after returning to their home schools.
Organizers of the honor band event hope these goals lead to a greater retention of students in the sixth grade band programs around the area.
