The second round of National Merit® Scholarship recipients were announced and two more SCCPSS students have been named National Merit Scholarship winners! Jenkins High School’s Elise R. Alexander and Margaret A. Hayes of Savannah Arts Academy are now two of three SCCPSS students to be awarded National Merit Scholarships this year! During the first round announcements last month, Jonathan Daye of Jenkins High School was awarded the National Merit Scholarship funded by BB&T Bank.Elise will receive the National Merit American University Scholarship to study International Relations. Margaret will be awarded the National Merit University of Central Florida Scholarship and plans to pursue a degree in film and graphic arts. The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, a test which serves as an initial screen of approximately 1.3 million entrants each year, and by meeting published program entry/participation requirements. Additional college-sponsored awards will be announced on July 14. By the conclusion of the 2008 competition, about 8,200 finalists will be selected to receive National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $36 million.
