Byron Spellman, a senior at Jenkins High School, is one of 55 students named to the State Superintendent's 2008-2009 Student Advisory Council. Spellman, who will be representing the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, was chosen out of approximately 700 applicants.
The State Superintendent of School’s Student Advisory Council is a group of high school students from across the state that meet throughout the year to discuss how decisions made at the state level affect students throughout Georgia.
The Jenkins High senior underwent an application process that included biographical information and essay questions. He was selected by a committee of Georgia Department of Education representatives based on how well he communicated his ideas and goals.
Spellman will meet with the council four times throughout the school year to advise the State Superintendent of Schools, Kathy Cox on policy issues and how these policies are having an impact in the classroom. The first of their four meetings will be held on October 20, 2008 at Georgia Perimeter College.
Students interested in applying for the advisory council must obtain application from their school or from Georgia Department of Education’s website at www.doe.k12.ga.us towards the end of July. All students in grades 9-12 are eligible to apply. For more information about the State Superintendent’s School Advisory Council, visit http://www.doe.k12.ga.us/sup.aspx?PageReq=SUPSAC.
