Ethics...The Basis For Organizational Success

The Savannah-Chatham Public School System is more than classrooms, media centers and gymnasiums. It is teachers, administrators, technicians and many other professionals. Thanks to the skill, dedication, and compassion of our people, we are a valuable and continuously improving community resource.

Our ongoing success depends on maintaining high ethical standards of conduct - honesty, integrity, and good judgment. To reinforce our commitment to conducting our profession with the highest standards of ethics, we have made available the SCCPSS Ethics HotLine.

Now there's an easy way to report work-related incidents to help improve the safety and security of our workplace.

What Is The Ethics HotLine?
The Ethics HotLine is a simple, confidential way to report any work-related incidents that may cause or contribute to losses or problems. It's a risk-free resource to help you make our workplace a safer, more secure environment.

What Are Work-Related Incidents?
Work-related incidents are situations or events that could potentially harm our students, our people or organization. They usually result from dishonest or unethical behavior. Examples include violations related to:

  Harassment/Discrimination
On-The-Job Substance Abuse
Thefts, Bribes, Kickbacks
Entertainment/Gifts and Gratuities
Internal Accounting Controls
Fraudulent Transactions
Insurance Fraud
Student Rights
Health and Safety Laws
Conflicts of Interest
Improper Use of Board Property
Copyright Laws and Software Piracy
Privacy of Student Records
Any Work-Related Concern

Who Should Use The Ethics HotLine?
You should...if you have information about possible criminal activities, ethical violations, or other work-related incidents. Your first option is to report your suspicions to your supervisor or another member of management. If you're uncomfortable with the direct approach, call the Ethics HotLine.

Why Is The Ethics HotLine Important To The Board?
Work-related incidents caused by dishonest or unethical people cost billions of dollars every year. These losses force cutbacks in areas such as hiring, wages and salaries, benefits, new equipment, and expansion plans. Your call to the Ethics HotLine can help reduce work-related incidents and improve both our work environment and bottom line.

Do I Have To Give My Name?
No. You may give yor name if you want, but you are not required to identify yourself. Your call to the Ethics HotLine is answered by an independent third-party communication specialist who has no affiliation with the Board and who is trained to personally handle each telephone call in a confidential and secure manner.

What Happens When I Make A Call?
When you call, a trained communication specialist will answer your call and ask you a series of questions. The questions will follow the "who, what, when, where, why and how" format. You will be given an individual code number and provided with a date to call back to recieve the status of your concern.

The communication specialist will take the information you provide and prepare a written report that will be forwarded to the internal auditor at the Board of Education.  If you want a personal response, you can provide your name and contact information and we will provide that information along with the report.  To protect everyone involved, no disciplinary or legal action will be taken based only on Ethics HotLine calls. Only substantiated findings will result in action.

How Do I Check The Status Of My Call To The Ethics HotLine?
The communications specialist will assign you an individual code number. This code is designed to protect your confidentiality.

After an agreed upon period of time, you can contact the Ethics HotLine, reference your individual code number, and the communication specialist will notify you of the status of your concern.

The Board's Internal Auditor will review the report and determine the appropriate action to take.  Action to be taken could include an inquiry or investigation, a referral to District administrators, or a response stating who the matter should be referred to.

What If I Don't Have All The Facts?
Call the Ethics HotLine even if you are not sure there is a problem. The Board's internal auditor will look into the information you provide, attempt to verify it, and take appropriate action. If additional information is needed, you will be asked follow-up questions by the communication specialist when you call to check the status of your concern.

You Are The Key To A Safe, Successful Workplace
While the Ethics HotLine is an ongoing program for concerned employees, we encourage direct communication between you, your coworkers, and your supervisor or another member of management. When you prefer to remain anonymous, call the Ethics HotLine anytime, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
