SCCPSS is proud to name Cheryl Lau, a senior at Jenkins High School, as the Superintendent’s Student of the Month for April.
Cheryl was selected for her outstanding academic performance, extra-curricular involvement and dedication to community service.
The daughter of Dr. Kam Fui Lau and Mei Lin Leong, Cheryl is a high-honor roll student with a 4.0 GPA and ranks 2 out 362 seniors in her class.
During her academic career, Cheryl has received countless awards and accolades. She was recently selected as a Governor’s Honors Program Finalist in the mathematics category. In addition, Cheryl has received the Georgia Tech Alumni Club Scholarship, the Woodford Scholar Award, the Mercer University Scholar Award, the Certificate of Outstanding Achievement in American Literature and the Georgia Certificate of Merit.
Active in several clubs and organizations, Cheryl still finds time to dedicate hours to community service. She gives back by tutoring students at Juliette Low Elementary and by serving as the team captain for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life Team.
After high school, Cheryl has her choice of attending Wellesley College, Vanderbilt University, Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, or Mercer University, all from which she has received acceptance letters and scholarships to study biomedical engineering with a pre-medical emphasis.
When asked what has motivated her to achieve academic success, Cheryl said: “…I want to learn and excel both academically and creatively so that one day I will be able to give back to the world.”
The Superintendent’s Student of the Month program recognizes individual students at the monthly board meetings who have excelled in the area of academics, leadership and community service. Cheryl will receive a plaque award, a $100 savings bond from Wachovia and special recognition from Dr. Thomas Lockamy at the board meeting on Wednesday, April 4.
