Biography: Mr. Alexander “Alex” Spensor Luten, Sr. was born on March 20, 1933. He is the ninth child of Mrs. Annie Collins Luten and Mr. James E. Luten, Sr. Nutured in a home of love filled with a strong belief in God, Alex joined Speedwell United Methodist Church at an early childhood stage.
At Speedwell, “Uncle Alex” as he is affectionately called, is very active in the church. He is the chairman of the Finance Committee, a member of the United Methodist Men’s Organization, the United Methodist Men’s Chorus, and teacher of the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class. He has also served as the church’s Lay Leader and was Speedwell’s Man of the Year.
Education in the Luten’s household was a major priority. In 1951, he graduated from Beach High School. In 1955, Alex earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Savannah State College. He furthered his education by earning a Masters Degree in Education in 1971 from Armstrong–Savannah State College Joint Graduate Program. In 1972, he earned his AS-5 Certificate in Administration and Supervision from the University of Georgia and Georgia Southern College.
Mr. Luten has given thirty-five years of dedicated service to the field of education. He has served on as well as chaired many civic, professional, and social organizations. He has learned that it takes teamwork in order to achieve many goals.
Throughout his years of hard work and determination, Mr. Luten has been able to maintain a long and loving relationship with his wife, Carolyn, and his son, Alexander, Jr. He is the proud grandfather of three lovely granddaughters - Alexia Ann, Carolyn Marie, and Virginia Denise, as well as the proud great-grandfather of Grace Marie.
