The PTA is the oldest and largest volunteer child advocacy organization in the United States. The purposes of the PTA are as follows:
· To promote the welfare of children and youth in the home, school, and community.
· To raise the standards of home life.
· To secure adequate laws for the care and protection of children and youth.
· To bring into closer relation the home and the school, that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth.
· To develop between educators and the general public such united efforts as will secure for all children and youth the highest advantages in physical, mental, and social education.
At Georgetown Elementary, our current PTA board consists of six members: President, 3 Vice-Presidents, Treasurer and Secretary. We currently have 1 or 2 committee chairs and plan to expand this year. The officers are re-elected yearly and serve for 1-2 terms. We sponsor 1-3 fundraisers per year to fund our programs and we do several things throughout the year for our teachers to make them feel appreciated. We support many of the school’s other organizations including the media center, multicultural committee, and Odyssey of the Mind. We support student incentive programs and occasionally purchase items for the school that are beyond the school budget. We have 3 general meetings each year that are open to the public. The meetings include PTA business discussions, an occasional guest speaker, and student performances. We are always in need of volunteers for the many events we sponsor.
