There never seems to be enough time to get everything completed anymore, even the important things. With the busyness of today’s lives, we thought we’d provide some on-the-go activities for families for that extra practice our children need. This month we’ll focus on MATH.
Math:
The most beneficial concept in math for students to know is their math facts (=,-, X,÷). Traveling again, is always a perfect time to do this. Have an older sibling (brother/sister) call out the facts to younger children while traveling. Oral facts work as well as written facts.
Telling time: have your children look at a clock (analogue is preferred, not digital) for appointments times such as: dinner, bath, bed, leaving of school, shopping, etc. Practice asking them “How long before we leave?”, How many minutes have passed since ___?” These activities will improve their ability to tell time.
Counting Money: if you have a “spare change” jug at home, allow your children to count it once a week. This will give them practice indentifying and counting money and you get to know how much you have saved. They can count the change you get back when you go shopping too. This is especially easy if you’re stopping at the drive through. Before they can eat, they have to ell you how much change you received. Then if there’s a change compartment in the car, the can put it in there.
Our purpose is to provide additional instructional resources to help our EIP students who are currently performing below grade level in areas of math and/or reading. Our goal is to help EIP students obtain the necessary academic skills to reach grade level performance in the shortest possible time.
