HISTORIC PRESERVATION IN THE NEWS

Historic Preservation Program students from SCCPSS’ Early College received an up-close and personal lesson when they visited Massie Heritage Center to observe the restoration work taking place at the historic school. Students toured the site with Project Contractor, Mr. Omar El-Khalidi of Sterling Builders and Restoration, observing and learning about the scope of work in progress. Massie School, Savannah’s first free public school, opened in 1856. The school’s 154-year history includes serving as a Union Hospital during the Civil War’s Union occupation of Savannah, then as Freedmen’s School during Reconstruction.
Massie educated generations of Savannahians until its closing as a regular public school in 1974. Recognizing the value of history education, the Board of Education still maintains Massie as a teaching museum for history and architecture. Massie Heritage Center serves as a field trip site for local and regional students and is also open to the public.
The Historic Preservation Program for high school students provides a foundation in the essential skills used in historic preservation and building restoration. Internships on local restoration sites allow students to apply and extend their classroom learning under the supervision of professional preservationists.

The group started classes August 13th and we continue to be impressed with the maturity and tenacity they have demonstrated throughout the transition to college life. We look forward to the Spring when close to 25 juniors will join them on campus, showing everyone just how exceptional Savannah Early College students really are!
