The gray wolf, or timber wolf was once an abundant species throughout much of North America. Habitat destruction and hunting caused their numbers to drastically drop and now they are found in only a small portion of their former range. Wolves are social and because of cooperative hunting, they can take down large prey such as moose or elk. The six wolves on exhibit at Oatland are fed a specialized canine diet that is commercially prepared. This diet contains all of the nutrients they need to remain healthy.
