The indigo snake grows to be the largest snake native to North America with adults reaching up to 9 feet in length.   These beautiful snakes are listed as a federally threatened species in Florida and Georgia, and as an endangered species in South Carolina and Mississippi.  They often seek shelter in the excavated burrows of gopher tortoises
