Our special events have always been wonderful opportunities for families to spend quality time together learning more about Oatland Island Wildlife Center. Due to our main buidling construction, for the 2009/10 season we are offering many more smaller scale events instead of the historically HUGE events.  Look for the return of the Medieval Festival, Halloween Hike and the Cane Grinding Festival in 2010!

-Fairy and Toad House Competition-

Saturday, April 10, 2010

11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.

fairy house

Put your wings and pointed ears on and come to Oatland Island Wildlife Center for a day of enchantment at our first annual Fairy and Toad House Day April 10, 11am-2pm. This family-themed day is all about the "wee folk"-fairies, pixies, sprites, and getting up close with the natural world. Children and their adults may enter a fairy house building contest using all natural materials. Will your house be able to lure a Fairy from her wings? Would a toad dare to tread past your threshold? House designs will be evaluated by a panel of judges and winners will be awarded prizes and the homes will remain on display after the competition. All competitors must follow these rules:

1. Fairy and Toad Houses should look so natural they are almost hidden. A location close to the ground is best.

2. You should use only natural materials. Dry grasses, leaves, sticks, pebbles and pinecones are just a few examples of materials to choose.

3. Be careful not to use or disturb any of nature's materials that are still living, especially flowers, ferns, mosses and lichen. Fairies do not like to disturb or destroy anything that is growing in nature.

Additional activities include a Scavenger Hunt; prize-winning games like Musical Mushrooms, and The Fairy Ring Stroll; Fairytale story telling and Fairy themed crafts will also be available.

Be sure to bring your whole family to stroll Oatland’s enchanted trails and see if you can catch a glimpse of any gnomes, trolls, elves and those warty wonders TOADS!
