- Shuman was designated as a Georgia School of Excellence in 1999.
- Academy students receive rigorous, arts-based academic instruction.
- Shuman has made AYP for the past three years.
- The Georgia Department of Education recognized Shuman as a Title I School of
Distinction in 2007.
- Shuman Fine Arts Middle School offers students opportunities to major in Orchestra,
Chorus, Band, Visual Art, Dance, and Theatre.
- Academy students receive intense instruction in order to prepare for Savannah Arts
Academy.
- Shuman's Band, Chorus, and Orchestra received Superior ratings at the District Music
Festival in 2007.
- Music composition students were featured at the 2007 Georgia Music Educators
Association In-Service Conference.
- In addition to classroom instruction, Shuman's Fine Arts students receive private and
group instruction from advanced college students and professional musicians, dancers, and
actors.

| Electives include Piano Lab, Computer-Assisted Music Composition, Computer Skills, and
Physical Education. Students are eligible for Shuman’s competitive sports programs and can
participate in Odyssey of the Mind competitions. Shuman has a SEARCH program (gifted
education) and provides many extra-curricular and community experiences. Shuman’s mentoring
programs, GLOSS and Boys to Men, are available to all students. |
