The American Montessori Society selected Dr. M. Ann Levett, Superintendent of the Savannah-Chatham County Public School District, to participate in the “Championing Montessori in the Public Sector" at the Montessori Event last month in recognition of Dr. Levett's commitment to supporting the Montessori philosophy in the Savannah-Chatham County Public School district.

Dr. Levett and 11 other district leaders from across the United States were recognized for their leadership in supporting and recognizing the Montessori pedagogy as a leading curriculum in the education field. The event brought together these leaders to share in the impact of Montessori teaching and learning in their district.

“Superintendents across the country are helping their school districts harness the power of Montessori education to create personal learning environments for all students," said AMS Chief Executive Officer Tim Purnell. “We want to make sure every child – no matter their background – has a voice in their educational journey and these leaders are providing the advocacy to promote this quality education."

“Championing Montessori in the Public Sector" highlighted the critical role of district leaders in supporting a vision of creating the prepared environment where educators arrange for students to have access to the tools, content, and expertise necessary to nourish and develop themselves as a whole child. The purpose was to reflect upon the work already done in championing for the success of Montessori in the public sector, and to provide an opportunity for leaders to come together and learn of the benefits, successes and innovative ways to further encourage the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori in their district.
