Emergency Planning and Response

Preparing for emergencies is an essential part of creating safe, supportive learning environments. SCCPSS follows Georgia law, national best practices, and guidance from public safety partners to ensure every school is ready to respond effectively to a wide range of situations.

Each school maintains a comprehensive School Safety Plan that is reviewed regularly and coordinated with local law enforcement, fire, and emergency management agencies. These plans outline clear procedures for prevention, response, reunification, and recovery. While specific details remain secure for safety reasons, families can be assured that every campus operates under consistent, well-developed protocols.

In alignment with Georgia’s Ricky and Alyssa’s Law, SCCPSS utilizes digital school mapping to provide first responders with accurate building layouts and critical safety information, helping reduce response times during emergencies. Schools also maintain Behavioral Threat Assessment Teams that proactively identify, assess, and support students or situations of concern. This prevention-focused approach allows staff to intervene early, connect students with resources, and address potential risks before they escalate.

Students and staff participate in age-appropriate safety drills throughout the year, including required intruder alert drills, fire drills, severe weather drills, and CPR or medical emergency preparedness activities. These exercises help build familiarity, reduce fear through routine practice, and ensure that staff and students understand how to respond calmly during an emergency.

Beyond drills, SCCPSS emphasizes ongoing training for employees, coordinated communication systems, and partnerships with first responders. School Resource Officers, School Safety Officers, and district leaders work together to evaluate plans, conduct exercises, and continually improve readiness.

Emergency preparedness is not a single event. It is a continuous process of planning, practicing, and strengthening our ability to protect students and staff. Through preparation, collaboration, and proactive planning, SCCPSS actively creates an environment where safety supports learning every day.
