English Speakers of Other Languages
Building Cultures, Building Futures: Where Language Proficiency Meets Academic Excellence at SCCPSS
English Learners (ELs) in the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools represent diverse origins from across the United States and the globe, each bringing with them a rich tapestry of backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge. Recognizing the potential impediment posed by language barriers for students whose primary language isn't English, the Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools have established an English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program. Through collaborative efforts among administrators, classroom instructors, ESOL instructors, paraprofessionals, and parents to ensure ELs receive comprehensive support in navigating the complexities of acquiring a new language within a new educational environment.
Our Purpose:
At Savannah Chatham County Public Schools we are committed to guiding our English Learners (ELs) on their journey to English language proficiency, including listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Our commitment extends beyond language acquisition; we embrace and celebrate diversity, fostering an inclusive environment that unites students from various backgrounds, ensuring they excel academically while promoting unity within our school community.
About ESOL:
English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) is an English language development program for eligible students in Kindergarten to Grade 12 whose home, native, or primary language is a language other than English. The goal of the ESOL program is to help students develop proficiency in English, encompassing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, while meeting the same academic content and academic achievement standards as their peers.
Schools/Cluster Sites that offer ESOL Services:
All SCCPSS schools either have an ESOL program for students zoned for that school or are designated as strategic cluster sites for English Learner (EL) students.
