Gifted Education
The Savannah Chatham County School System is dedicated to nurturing the exceptional abilities of students in grades kindergarten through twelve through our Gifted Education Program. We provide tailored instructional services to students who demonstrate outstanding aptitude for intellectual, academic, and/or creative pursuits. Eligibility for this program is determined by the stringent criteria set forth by the State Board of Education.
Our Philosophy:
At the core of our gifted department lies a profound philosophy: to address the unique instructional needs of gifted learners. We believe in adapting curriculum content, processes, products, and pacing to suit the diverse abilities of each student. Our program places a strong emphasis on fostering interactions among intellectually like-minded peers and providing an educational experience characterized by depth and rigor, surpassing conventional classroom boundaries.
We encourage collaboration among teachers, parents, and students to tailor resources and instructional methods, facilitating specialized educational experiences that empower gifted students to realize their fullest potential.
Who is a Gifted Student?
Gifted students embody exceptional intellectual and/or creative abilities, demonstrating a remarkable degree of motivation and excelling in specific academic domains. They require specialized instruction and ancillary services to reach academic levels commensurate with their abilities. Our program recognizes that giftedness transcends boundaries of race, ethnicity, gender, economic status, or nationality. Moreover, we acknowledge that giftedness may coexist with physical disabilities, learning disabilities, or behavioral challenges.
Our Services:
Gifted education services are available at every elementary, middle, and high school within the Savannah Chatham County Public School System, ensuring accessibility for students from all walks of life.
Program Evaluation:
The effectiveness of our gifted programs is continuously evaluated by district and site personnel through rigorous formative and summative assessments. These evaluations assess various facets, including:
-
Identification processes, encompassing referrals, nominations, assessments, and eligibility determinations
-
Delivery models and site schedules
-
Curriculum effectiveness, tailored to documented student strengths
-
Demographic proportionality of tested and identified gifted students
-
Ongoing professional development initiatives
-
Transparent communication with parents and the wider community
Accountability:
In adherence to Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) guidelines, our district conducts a self-assessment every three years to ensure the continual enhancement of our gifted education program.
