The Godley Station Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl teams in both Elementary and Middle School traveled to Valdosta State University on Saturday for the Southern Region competition. Having already placed first (Middle School) and second (Elementary) in the SCCPSS district competition, both teams competed against the winners from 61 other counties/districts in Southern Georgia. We are proud to report that BOTH teams won first place and will now compete in the State Finals at the University of Georgia on March 22, 2025!  

Godley Station Elementary Grades Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team

The Elementary team is coached by Ms. Cheyenne Blackwell and Mrs. Sarah Wancour. The students are Sathvik Nanjangud, Ibrahim Omar, Pranav Arul Kumareshan, Gyan Patel, Nahyan Ahmed, Jacqueline Porter, Clarke Giddens, Rishabh Parvatikumar, Smera Balwan, and Shraddha Chintapalli.

Godley Station Middle Grades Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Team

The Middle School team is coached by Mrs. Suzanne Campbell. The team members are Hawra Bahaduri, Shloka Chouti, Zaylen Diaz, Hiba Ezziat, Janani Kumar, Sanvi Nanjangud, Divya Patel, Yesha Patel, Ahana Rao, and Reyanshi Shrestha.

The Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl (HRRB) is open to students in grades 4-12 across the state. Elementary and middle school students read and are quizzed on the 20 Georgia Book Award Nominees each year, while high school students read and are quizzed on the 20 Georgia Peach Teen Book Award Nominees. Over 600 schools throughout Georgia held competitions at the local school district level.  Helen Ruffin, a Library Media Specialist at Sky Haven Elementary School in DeKalb County founded the unique competition called the Reading Bowl in 1986.

Godley Station Middle Grades Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl 2025 District Champions!

The Savannah-Chatham County Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl for upper elementary and middle grades was held this year at New Hampstead High School on Saturday, January 25th. Students from 23 SCCPSS schools competed.

The Georgia book award began in the Department of Language Education at the University of Georgia’s College of Education and its purpose is to, “to foster a love of reading in the children of Georgia, and to introduce them to books of literary excellence”.
