Hubert Student Wins Savannah Contest to Name City’s New Pothole Filler Truck

The city of Savannah has a new customer service initiative – a specialized truck that fills potholes at the expected rate of 2,000 a year!

A truck that hard-working deserves a name and the city held a contest to choose it. Suggestions were solicited from students who attend SCCPSS schools within city limits.

Nine names were submitted including:

·       Patching Patrick

·       Pothole Punisher

·       Kitty Pavers

·       Volkswagen Pavers 

·       Road Ranger

·       Potrick Patcher

·       Asphalt A Vista Baby

·       Uncle Fill

·       Road Buddy

City employees were then given the chance to vote on their favorite.

Once all the votes were counted, Hubert sixth grader Naima Williams’ suggestion of “Uncle Fill” was named the winner. Naima was surprised at the school on Monday morning with her parents, Savannah Mayor Van Johnson, City Manager Jay Melder, and Board of Education President Roger Moss in attendance.

Naima said she came up with the name from a character in the 1990’s television show “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”. After the announcement, Naima and her classmates headed outside to see the new truck fill a pothole right in front of the school. Naima even got the chance to take the controls during the demonstration!
