Islands High School FFA Chapter Collects Thousands of Essential Items for Old Savannah City Mission

The Islands High School FFA Chapter has completed its annual November community service project with record-breaking success, collecting over 4,500 total items to support individuals experiencing homelessness through Old Savannah City Mission.
This year, Islands FFA expanded its focus after students identified a growing need for items beyond their traditional yearly food drive. Through schoolwide participation, classroom competitions, and strong community support, students gathered an impressive:
- 3,035 hygiene products
- 1,248 food items, including
- 372 pounds and 14.9 ounces of canned goods
- 233 clothing items, including socks, pants, shirts, and shoes
“Our students took ownership of this project from the beginning,” said Dr. Elizabeth Miegel, Islands FFA Advisor. “Their enthusiasm and compassion for our community truly made this year’s drive exceptional.”
Islands FFA President Emmet Williams celebrated the teamwork and student-driven leadership behind the project.
“It was amazing to see our students come together for a cause bigger than ourselves,” said the FFA President. “Everyone pitched in—whether it was bringing in donations, encouraging their classmates, or helping with organizing the items. They really proved what our school can do when we work together to support our community.”
The annual November drive is a long-standing tradition of the Islands FFA Chapter, aligning with the National FFA Organization’s mission to develop premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education. This year’s friendly, points-based classroom competition added excitement and encouraged widespread participation across the agriculture program.
Old Savannah City Mission has expressed deep appreciation for the donation, noting that the volume and variety of items collected will help sustain their outreach efforts through the coming months.
Islands FFA will continue hosting service projects and leadership activities throughout the school year as part of its Program of Activities, reinforcing the value of community service and civic engagement.
