Ready to PLAY? Live Oak Libraries PLAY Card Encourages Reading, Literacy
Stacy Jennings

United Way of the Coastal Empire, SCCPSS, and Live Oak Public Libraries are teaming up to promote the use of Live Oak Public Libraries PLAY Cards.  The PLAY Card is a student’s key to free books, learning tools, and resources. It provides fines-free borrowing and access to digital materials, helping students succeed in school and beyond. PLAY Cards give Georgia public school students fines-free access to millions of public library resources, including both physical and digital resources. When students are assigned student ID / lunch numbers at their school, they are automatically awarded a PLAY account.  It’s like having a whole library in a student’s pocket. This PLAY card is meant to be the student’s very own special keepsake, unlocking a treasure box of books and more.  On February 3rd, teachers read a donated book to PreK through second grade classes and gave a PLAY card to every student in participating schools.

To encourage our youngest readers to use their PLAY Cards, Live Oak Public Libraries will track PLAY Card checkouts for Pre-K, Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd-grade SCCPSS students from February 3 to February 28.  The grade with the highest PLAY Card usage at one participating SCCPSS Elementary or K-8 school will win a Donatos pizza party for all students and teachers in that grade.  To participate, students must use their PLAY Card to check out physical materials from a Live Oak Public Libraries branch. Any book counts, regardless of type or reading level. The goal is to encourage students to read, explore, and develop a love for the library.

Digital checkouts, including e-books, audiobooks, and online databases, do not count toward the contest.

Need Transportation to the Library?

United Way of the Coastal Empire provides roundtrip Lyft passes (up to $26 each way) through the Ride United Transportation Access program to help families get to the library. To request a ride pass, ask your student’s teacher for details.
